Mount Sinai football tops John Glenn 21

Sinai quarterback Kevin Chartrand threw for touchdowns of 80 and 34 yards and John Delaney ran for a third score as the visiting Mustangs beat John Glenn in the season opener for both schools on Sept. John Glenn’s running game was strong. Quarterback Grayden Aebisher ran for 85 yards, according to Newsday. Keith King, who ran for at least five first downs, rushed for 84 yards. GJ Cook ran for 81 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown to open the third quarter. “I had to do something for the team to get us motivated and get us going,” Cook said. “We’re a good running team,” Knights coach TJ Brocking said. “We have a bunch of guys who can make something happen with the ball in their hands so we always try to get them the ball as much as possible.” Still, it was a disappointing start to the season for the Knights who opened 0-1. “We kind of knew we were a little bit of an underdog going against them,” Brocking said of Mt. “They were the three seed and we knew they were good. I thought we were ready for them. Two or three mistakes changed the outcome of the game and they scored touchdowns on those mistakes. I thought the kids played hard. With so few numbers our kids don’t come off the field so the conditioning and exhaustion level of game one is really difficult for them but they battled to the best they could, so I’m proud of that.” “Penalties definitely killed us,” John Glenn’s King said. “If we eliminate the penalties we’ll be golden.” Mt. Sinai (1-0) opened the scoring in the first quarter when Chartrand connected with Ethan Arita on an 80-yard touchdown pass. Sam Covington’s extra point – he was 3-for-3 on the day – was good, to make the score 7-0. In the second quarter, Isaiah Perkins caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Chartrand to put the Mustangs ahead 14-0 with 10:06 left in the half. John Glenn got on the board five minutes later when Aebisher connected with Jayce Boyle-Summers on a 33-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt was no good and that made the score 14-6 in favor of Mt. Sinai, which was the score at halftime. Cook’s 70-yard touchdown run on the Knights’ opening drive of the second half narrowed Mt. Sinai’s lead to 14-12 after the Knights’ two-point conversion attempt was no good. The score stayed that way until 8:41 left in the fourth quarter when Mt. Sinai’s Delaney intercepted a pass, giving the Mustangs the ball in John Glenn territory. On fourth down and five, Chartrand threw to Matthew Stuchio for a long gain that put Mt. Sinai inside the 1-yard line. Delaney scored on a touchdown run and Covington’s extra point attempt was good to give the Mustangs a 21-12 lead they held onto the rest of the game. John Glenn traveled to Mattituck/Greenport/Southold for a game on Thursday, Sept. Sinai’s next game is Sept. 18 at Bayport-Blue Point.
