After earning top world archery honors, Pennsylvania hunter gets elk

A Pennsylvania archer who just earned the top two world championship honors has started his hunting season by getting a hefty bull elk on Friday, Sept. 11. Brady Myers, 22, of Adams County, has been shooting compound bows since he was a young boy and has been competing for 14 years. On Aug. 1, the East Berlin archer was named the overall Shooter of the Year in Cullman, Alabama, when he competed in the open pro division for the Archery Shooters Association (ASA). He also won the International Bowhunters Organization’s (IBO) Men's Pro Open World Championship at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in Davis, West Virginia, from Aug. 6–9. “It was definitely my best year by far,” he said about competing for the past 14 years. “It feels good. All the years of putting in the work have paid off,” he said. With the competitions ending for the year, Myers is now focused on archery hunting. He and his dad, Donnie, drove to Oregon for elk and the son ended up getting a large 5x5. “We were sitting over a wallow and within the first hour, a six-point bull was coming down. He came right at us, all the way in to 18 yards. He turned away and I went to draw back, and I brushed my arm against my (binocular) harness and made some noise. He actually heard it and ran off,” he said. Later, two herds of elk moved into the meadow close to where he was set up. “For a while there, two bulls were kind of going at each other bugling back and forth the whole evening,” he said. A few of the cows moved toward the wallow where Brady was watching. “One of the herd bulls actually followed them right to the wallow and then I got a shot at a pretty nice 5-point bull,” he said about the 45-yard opportunity. “For a 5x5, he’s pretty good, since he’s not the 6x6, but I mean he’s a pretty average bull out here,” he said. “We don’t get a lot of giants in this area, it seems like, but he was a pretty good bull."
